By Shaheeda, Voluntourist at IHF Aceh center
And so, my 2 weeks are finally up but I cannot deny that it has been such an amazing and wonderfully enriched experience volunteering with IHF. Who would have thought that time would pass so quickly. Looking back, I have had the honour of meeting good people with brilliant ideas and a passion to serve the underprivileged.
Having arrived from Jakarta on the 15th of February, I was welcomed by Philippe and made to feel comfortable. Although the center may not be that fantastic looking, it was undeniable that it was a very warm and cosy place. The classrooms may not be that colourful or spacious but they were most definitely adequate with the whiteboards and furniture. Now of course, there could be more but I understand how the emphasis is truly on providing the kids the substance and not the material. Hence, while on the onset it may appear to be really basic, the truth is, the kids were really just happy to be taught by the wonderful volunteers ( both locals as well as international ones. )
Above, I am playing a little English game using UNO cards. The kids had to spell numbers, colours and provide a word to describe the UNO card selected. Really simple but it works well to assess the kids’ understanding and command of the English Language.
It was not just about teaching the kids who came to the center in Banda Aceh but it was more importantly the opportunity to provide a quality education and to encourage these kids to love learning. I was pretty fortunate that I was able to run a dance workshop too and it was good fun. Both the kids and I truly had an enjoyable time.
The people over at the center, Philippe, Joko, Caroline and Yassien have truly made my 2 weeks voluntourist stint a most memorable one. I say goodbye with a heavy heart but glad to know that these kids are being looked after well and that they will be able to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge required both academically as well as holistically.
See you later for now. What a beautiful 2 weeks it has been.
With lots of love.
