Last week we had some interesting classes. They included educational films, a question and answer session, and my personal favourite – “scariest monster teacher” class!
That’s right! “Scariest monster teacher” class was a blast! The goal was to draw a picture of various teachers at the center as a monster. The students were not taking it easy on anyone. Laila the Strong half Cat and half Woman was amongst the weirdest creatures our SMA (high school) students came up with. This was incredibly amusing to us all as Laila, one of the local volunteers, is one of the sweetest people you could have the pleasure of meeting.
In addition to the classes, we also had the chance to go to the Aceh Award Ceremony for a documentary film. The highlight of the outing however was not the documentary itself, but the brilliant Saman dancing we got to see! A few years ago, UNESCO officially recognized Aceh’s traditional Saman dance as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, which needs UNESCO’s urgent protection. I can definitely attest to that fact! It was a beautiful thing to be able to see in person. Anyone wanting to see should definitely find a way—going to a performance like that is a fantastic use of one’s time.
We also took some students on a trip to the museum. It was great! Afterwards, we went out for some nice cold drinks. This quickly evolved into a chocolate cake with chocolate cake and avocado flavored ice-cream. Delicious all around!
